Global Head of Safeguarding

We are at a really exciting point in our history. With a new Chief Executive and Chair-designate, and a refreshed narrative of purpose, Leonard Cheshire is demonstrably moving up a gear.

Our strategy review is also well underway, and there is a tangible sense that we are firmly on the front foot in terms of organisational shape, effectiveness and purpose. We are living our values of Proud, Positive and Pioneering, and really building on the strength of our highly respected brand – you’ll see much more evidence in the coming years of our determination to make the case for a fair and inclusive world.

You’ll complete the design – and then oversee and monitor the implementation – of our Global Safeguarding Framework, ensuring it delivers our rigorous safeguarding objectives both in the UK and internationally. The overarching structure is in place in all territories, but the process of localisation is continuing, and an early task will be to see this process over the line. This will include the refinement of some systems, including reporting, but the work required is well understood by the team and the wider organisation, and there is very strong support for our safeguarding strategy at executive level.

We will expect you to be able to balance a mixed portfolio of strategic and responsive work, acting as both an expert adviser and a skilled practitioner as required. You must be able to lead dispersed teams with confidence, and show that you understand how to encourage a performance management culture that complements personal development. As you’d expect in an international organisation, you must be flexible with your work-pattern, including adapting to different timezones.

Leonard Cheshire has set something of a benchmark for safeguarding in our sector, particularly in the international sphere, but we are totally committed to remaining exemplars – as a charity driven by a commitment to inclusion, we aim far higher than mere compliance. So be in no doubt: you will make a significant difference from day one, and you will have the influence, senior support and professional resources you need to get the job done. We are leaders in our sector and we make a difference to people’s lives every day. This role enables you to enhance and extend that impact; for an experienced safeguarding professional, with a good mix of UK and international experience, it’s a very attractive proposition.
